POWER OF THE MIND ~ CHAPTER 4

WE STAND IN AWE before the great fact that we can learn the nature of God, of Being, as Mind. Mrs. Eddy taught that the primal slavery was accepting human life as defined by the physical senses.

IN CLASS she started her revelation at a single point in her students' thinking, namely, their concept of God. Each student had to explain his concept of God. Then, for three days Mrs. Eddy would open up to them a view of divinity that transformed the world they had known.

DAY 1 ~ Today: Introduction

True sense of infinite;

Question. — What is Mind?

Answer. — Mind is God. The exterminator of error is the great truth that God, good, is the only Mind, and that the supposititious opposite of infinite Mind — called devil or evil — is not Mind, is not Truth, but error, without intelligence or reality. There can be but one Mind, because there is but one God; and if mortals claimed no other Mind and accepted no other, sin would be unknown. We can have but one Mind, if that one is infinite. We bury the sense of infinitude, when we admit that, although God is infinite, evil has a place in this infinity, for evil can have no place, where all space is filled with God. [SH 469:12]

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day; Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday. A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation; There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways. They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name. He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation. [Psalm 91]

Neither animosity nor mere personal attachment should impel the motives or acts of the members of The Mother Church. In Science, divine Love alone governs man; and a Christian Scientist reflects the sweet amenities of Love, in rebuking sin, in true brotherliness, charitableness, and forgiveness. The members of this Church should daily watch and pray to be delivered from all evil, from prophesying, judging, condemning, counseling, influencing or being influenced erroneously. [Manual 40]

To students: Science is absolute, and best understood through the study of my works and the daily Christian demonstration thereof. It is their materiality that clogs the progress of students, and “this kind goeth not forth but by prayer and fasting.” It is materialism through which the animal magnetizer preys, and in turn becomes a prey. Spirituality is the basis of all true thought and volition. Assembling themselves together, and listening to each other amicably, or contentiously, is no aid to students in acquiring solid Christian Science. Experience and, above all, obedience, are the aids and tests of growth and understanding in this direction. (Misc. 156:17)

To Zion's Hearld …on Prayer 1885 {reply to Zion’s Hearld re MBE is prayerless}: Three times a day, I retire to seek the divine blessing on the sick and sorrowing, with my face toward the Jerusalem of Love and Truth, in silent prayer to the Father which “seeth in secret,” and with childlike confidence that He will reward “openly.” In the midst of depressing care and labor I turn constantly to divine Love for guidance, and find rest. It affords me great joy to be able to attest to the truth of Jesus’ words. Love makes all burdens light, it giveth a peace that passeth understanding, and with “signs following.” As to the peace, it is unutterable; as to “signs,” behold the sick who are healed, the sorrowful who are made hopeful, and the sinful and ignorant who have become “wise unto salvation”! When a hungry heart petitions the divine Father-Mother God for bread, it is not given a stone,—but more grace, obedience, and love. If this heart, humble and trustful, faithfully asks divine Love to feed it with the bread of heaven, health, holiness, it will be conformed to a fitness to receive the answer to its desire; then will flow into it the “river of His pleasure,” the tributary of divine Love, and great growth in Christian Science will follow,—even that joy which finds one’s own in another’s good. 1 Bless the Lord, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name.

2 Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits:

3 Who forgiveth all thine iniquities; who healeth all thy diseases;

4 Who redeemeth thy life from destruction; who crowneth thee with lovingkindness and tender mercies;

5 Who satisfieth thy mouth with good things; so that thy youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

6 The Lord executeth righteousness and judgment for all that are oppressed.

7 He made known his ways unto Moses, his acts unto the children of Israel.

8 The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and plenteous in mercy.

9 He will not always chide: neither will he keep his anger for ever.

10 He hath not dealt with us after our sins; nor rewarded us according to our iniquities.

11 For as the heaven is high above the earth, so great is his mercy toward them that fear him.

12 As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

13 Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.

14 For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust.

15 As for man, his days are as grass: as a flower of the field, so he flourisheth.

16 For the wind passeth over it, and it is gone; and the place thereof shall know it no more.

17 But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting upon them that fear him, and his righteousness unto children’s children;

18 To such as keep his covenant, and to those that remember his commandments to do them.

19 The Lord hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.

20 Bless the Lord, ye his angels, that excel in strength, that do his commandments, hearkening unto the voice of his word.

21 Bless ye the Lord, all ye his hosts; ye ministers of his, that do his pleasure.

22 Bless the Lord, all his works in all places of his dominion: bless the Lord, O my soul. [Psalms 103]

To fear sin is to misunderstand the power of Love and the divine Science of being in man’s relation to God,—to doubt His government and distrust His omnipotent care. As the mythology of pagan Rome has yielded to a more spiritual idea of Deity, so will our material theories yield to spiritual ideas, until the finite gives place to the infinite, sickness to health, sin to holiness, and God’s kingdom comes “in earth, as it is in heaven.” The basis of all health, sin-lessness, and immortality is the great fact that God is the only Mind; and this Mind must be not merely believed, but it must be understood. To get rid of sin through Science, is to divest sin of any supposed mind or reality, and never to admit that sin can have intelligence or power, pain or pleasure. You conquer error by denying its verity. Our various theories will never lose their imaginary power for good or evil, until we lose our faith in them and make life its own proof of harmony and God.

The opening sentence illustrates spiritual evolution in conjunction with scientific translation.
Reviewing the whole platform we observe how the spiritual idea defines the infinite at the highest altitude possible and yet is the “Basis of health and immortality” (M.H. p. 339: 22).
This basis is the great fact that God is the only Mind. (Recapitulation q. 10 p. 469) What is Mind? opens on this same note: “God good . . . the only Mind . . .” The acceptance and understanding of this great fact eliminates sin wholly and finally. [SINTON]

Since God is All, there is no room for His unlikeness. God, Spirit, alone created all, and called it good. Therefore evil, being contrary to good, is unreal, and cannot be the product of God. A sinner can receive no encouragement from the fact that Science demonstrates the unreality of evil, for the sinner would make a reality of sin, — would make that real which is unreal, and thus heap up “wrath against the day of wrath.” He is joining in a conspiracy against himself, — against his own awakening to the awful unreality by which he has been deceived. Only those, who repent of sin and forsake the unreal, can fully understand the unreality of evil.

Finally, Science shows and demonstrates that “Spirit, alone created all” and that evil is not and cannot possibly be “the product of God” (See M.H. line 9).
To persist or indulge in sin is to prolong a state of self-deception and its consequences.
To speculate or to theorize on evil never solves any problem. Demonstration rising to coincidence with Principle solves it for all time. [SINTON]

The word Adam is from the Hebrew adamah, signifying the red color of the ground, dust, nothingness. Divide the name Adam into two syllables, and it reads, a dam, or obstruction. This suggests the thought of something fluid, of mortal mind in solution. It further suggests the thought of that is “darkness . . . upon the face of the deep,” when matter or dust was deemed the agent of Deity in creating man, — when matter, as that which is accursed, stood opposed to Spirit. Here, a dam is not a mere play upon words; it stands for obstruction, error, even the supposed separation of man from God, and the obstacle which the serpent, sin, would impose between man and his creator. The dissection and definition of words, aside from their metaphysical derivation, is not scientific. Jehovah declared the ground was accursed; and from this ground, or matter, sprang Adam, not with-standing God had blessed the earth “for man’s sake.” From this it follows that Adam was not the ideal man for whom the earth was blessed. The ideal man was revealed in due time, and was known as Christ Jesus.

This paragraph 29 in the Platform corresponds to Science reflecting Christianity: in the overall design of the textbook Chapter 15 GENESIS corresponds to Science reflecting Christianity and includes the interpretation of the Adam allegory. “Spiritual evolution alone is worthy of the exercise of divine power” (S. & H. p. 135). The Adam symbol is introduced here to illustrate that in scientific demonstration the inversion has to be faced and the negation to be disposed of before the ideal man can be attained and established beyond possibility of loss or reversal. The symbol Adam occupies two paragraphs in the Glossary of Science and Health. The first illustrates the evolution of elementary latent error or “original sin” into the self-conscious phenomenon organised through the five senses. The second paragraph corresponds with the definition presented here as a dam—an obstruction in conjunction with something fluid, leading to an obstacle between man and his creator. Both aspects must be understood and handled to the point of nothing ness in true practice. The spiritual interpretation of the Old Testament from Adam to Christ Jesus and on to today provides thousand-year periods (of which our present is the sixth drawing to a close). These periods record spiritual evolution in terms of the impact of the spiritual idea upon world consciousness. What these records indicate, Christ Jesus demonstrated in full but individually. Subject sickness, sin, and death to the rule of health and holiness in Christian Science, and you ascertain that this Science is demonstrably true, for it heals the sick and sinning as no other system can. Christian Science, rightly understood, leads to eternal harmony. It brings to light the only living and true God and man as made in His likeness; whereas the opposite belief — that man originates in matter and has beginning and end, that he is both soul and body, both good and evil, both spiritual and material — terminates in discord and mortality, in the error which must be destroyed by Truth. The mortality of material man proves that error has been ingrafted into the premises and conclusions of material and mortal humanity.

In this paragraph we have the tone of the Word indicating “Purity the path to perfection”—the line of approach; whilst the absolute fact provided by Science is “perfection [as] the order of celestial being which demonstrates. Observe the transition from Word to Christ. Being is eternal progression: it cannot be compartmented. [SINTON]

PLANKS 25 OF 32 ~ MAN REFLECTS THE PERFECT GOD

ORIGINAL TEXT BY MARY BAKER EDDY [MBE]

God is individual and personal in a scientific sense, but not in any anthropomorphic sense. Therefore man, reflecting God, cannot lose his individuality; but as material sensation, or a soul in the body, blind mortals do lose sight of spiritual individuality, Material personality is not realism; it is not the reflection or likeness of Spirit, the perfect God. Sen sualism is not bliss, but bondage. For true happiness, man must harmonize with his Principle, divine Love; the Son must be in accord with the Father, in conformity with Christ. According to divine Science, man is in a degree as perfect as the Mind that forms him. The truth of be ing makes man harmonious and immortal, while error is mortal and discordant.

One of the important offices of Science is interpretation. In this case Science reflecting the Word clears away any anthropomorphic sense (i.e. bodily or corporeal sense), falsely attributed to God and man, in order that true individuality may be understood within the oneness of being. Personality and sensualism are types of bondage. True individuality is the answer. Perfect harmony is found and ful filled only in co-incident relationship within the divine Principle, Love, in divine Science. In application, “The truth of being makes man harmonious and immortal”. . . (See 11. 11-12, my italics). [SINTON]

The advent of Jesus of Nazareth marked the first century of the Christian era, but the Christ is without beginning of years or end of days. Throughout all generations both before and after the Christian era, the Christ, as the spiritual idea, — the reflection of God, — has come with some measure of power and grace to all prepared to receive Christ, Truth. Abraham, Jacob, Moses, and the prophets caught glorious glimpses of the Messiah, or Christ, which baptized these seers in the divine nature, the essence of Love. The divine image, idea, or Christ was, is, and ever will be inseparable from the divine Principle, God. The word Christ is not properly a synonym for Jesus, though it is commonly so used. Jesus was a human name, which belonged to him in common with other Hebrew boys and men, for it is identical with the name Joshua, the renowned Hebrew leader. On the other hand, Christ is not a name so much as the divine title of Jesus. Christ expresses God's spiritual, eternal nature. The name is synonymous with Messiah, and alludes to the spirituality which is taught, illustrated, and demonstrated in the life of which Christ Jesus was the embodiment. The proper name of our Master in the Greek was Jesus the Christ; but Christ Jesus better signifies the Godlike.

The correct use of Christ and Jesus whether used individually or in combination is set forth here in para. XII. “Messiah or Christ” (M.H.). These terms are synonymous. The office of Christ is defined still further. Christ is both ideal and idea to be demonstrated. The context determines the shade of difference in meaning.

Jesus was the son of a virgin. He was appointed to speak God's word and to appear to mortals in such a form of humanity as they could understand as well as perceive. Mary's conception of him was spiritual, for only purity could reflect Truth and Love, which were plainly incarnate in the good and pure Christ Jesus. He expressed the highest type of divinity, which a fleshly form could express in that age. Into the real and ideal man, the fleshly element cannot enter. Thus it is that Christ illustrates the coincidence, or spiritual agreement, between God and man in His image.[MBE]

The text depicts Jesus as "the son of a virgin" destined to become the Christ Jesus who would rise progressively to the altitude of correspondence where the Principle and its idea are one in coincidence. 01/17/2025 ~ Mind ~ Belief is not Fact
Mind ~ Fact
Mortal Mind ~ Suggestions to form False – Belief

SOME KEY POINTS
1. If we prove a belief to be fact, then it is no longer a false belief & is termed Truth, a fact, something that is fixed, not variable.
2. If we understand what God is & what man is & the relationship between God & man, then we very definitely have something that is fixed & is able to be relied on to set us free from anything that is un-like-God.
3. Mary Baker Eddy uses the term evil as a very broad term to mean anything that is un-like-God, no matter what the form it takes.
4. On the one side we have something that is a representation of the incorporeal, divine, supreme & infinite Mind, Spirit, Soul, Principle, Life, Truth & Love, & this all refers to reality.
5. Everything that is not reality is a misunderstanding & is not really a fact at all, can never be proven to be a fact, and must be accepted as only a belief that is a false view. So that is termed as false belief, opposed to a true fact.
6. If one wants to obtain a healing, then the goal is to separate fact from fiction, truth from fantasy, perfection from anything that is less than perfect.
7. Perfection is flawless. There is no mixture with perfection. It is a fixed fact.
8. Anything at all that is in visible form must be translated to its true spiritual nature as long as it is real. For example, a beautiful rose must be recognized & acknowledged as the beauty of God being expressed, the fragrance, the aroma or smell, is the spiritual sense being expressed.
9. The way the petals unfold from a tight bud into a full bloom is the action of divine Mind revealing itself. All of these qualities are the substance of Spirit, which is flawless.
10. If something appears to be visible that is evil, such as a storm, then it must be recognized as not being a part of the reality of the universe of God, but an attempt to distract consciousness & implant into consciousness that reality includes evil. We must claim Truth to be the only reality & the only action that can exist is good action, the action of God, the action of perfect, all intelligent Mind.
11. EVIL ~ Our duty is to refuse to believe that evil is real ~ & specifically state that it is unreal & not from God ~ it is a fiction & has absolutely no power ~ because the only power is the power of divine Mind which is defined as good.
