In my letter of invitation to you, I asked you all, as a
preparation for our Association meeting, to read again with
reverence and prayer, Mrs. Eddy's autobiography "Retrospection
and Introspection" and her article on the Christian Science
textbook. I had a special purpose in doing this. It is my deep
conviction that we are in the midst of a great renaissance in
our movement, the animus of which is a rebirth of understanding
and appreciation of the spiritual leadership of Mary Baker Eddy,
not only as the Leader of the Christian Science movement, but as
the spiritual Leader of the world. In the days before her human
personality disappeared, we had a very near sense of her
presence and guidance. She was at hand to rebuke our
shortcomings, heal our differences, guide our actions, comfort
our sorrows, rejoice in our victories. Then came the cloud which
received her out of our sight, and I have felt that
unconsciously we have accepted the world's attitude in regard to
this occurrence. Even though we knew she was not dead, we may
have admitted that she had gone somewhere else, - was not with
us as vitally as she had been. |

Science and Health makes clear to students of Christian Science
the universally liberating truth that because Life is spiritual
and eternal, man as the expression of Life is an immortal being;
death is but another dream within the whole overall dream of
mortal existence. Those same students, whilst recognising these
absolute truths, may at their present stage of progress think
with apprehension about passing on and all it implies. They may
keep their dreads hidden, but it must be good to seek definite
divine answers.
Staying with the highest we see of the Science revealed in the
Gospels, the Apocalypse, and the writings of Mary Baker Eddy,
can we not trust that Love's fulfilled and fulfilling plan for
the individual will always be in operation and could not
suddenly cease? Should we not affirm with all our heart and soul
that because Love is Mind, it will care for every detail for us
(and for all concerned) with supreme intelligence? Whatever the
appearance, none of us can ever find ourselves in a position
outside Love or that is not subject to divine control. |

Dear Fellow Scientist:
You, as a Christian Scientist or indeed as any thoughtful man or
women, will find the accompanying Story of vital interest
although there is nothing of pure Christian Science in it. Jesus
used parables to illustrate special points in his teaching of
pure Christianity and this Story should be taken as a parable
which illustrates perfectly the fact that hypnotic suggestion
cannot deceive a mind which has fortified itself with the truth
about any fact or circumstance which presents itself negatively.
In this account of Professor Herman von Scholtz's research into
hypnotism the point is brought out that he resisted every effort
of the Hindu hypnotist to deceive him, as long as the
suggestions came as abnormalities, as startling and unusual
experiences, but was tempted to yield to the suggestions of
normal hunger and thirst. To the Professor normal matter was
real even though he had fortified himself against believing in
any unusual manifestations which the Hindu adept might appear to
conjure.
It has been 75 years since SCIENCE AND HEALTH was given to the
world in 1875, with its thunderous message There is no life,
truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite
Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all.
Do you as a Christian Scientist believe this? Do you accept what
you call normal matter as real and then attempt to abolish
abnormal matter as Professor von Scholtz was almost tricked into
doing? |
